Well and Facility Asset Management Professional

About This Career

Well and Facility Asset Management Professionals gather, analyze and report information about company well and facility assets, including operating and non-operating wells (onshore and offshore), and field-based facilities and pipelines. They have in-depth knowledge of wells and facilities and manage the technical and regulatory reporting requirements throughout the assets’ lifecycle.

Education: A high school diploma (or equivalent) is typically required. However, a post-secondary diploma or degree in a relevant field, such as business, petroleum technology, land administration or records management, is considered an asset. The Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT), in partnership with the Centre for Energy Asset Management Studies (CEAMS), offers an Energy Asset Management (EAM) two-year diploma.                                  

Employment: This occupation is found in both onshore and offshore environments and is employed in the exploration and production (E&P), oil sands, oil and gas services, and pipeline sectors of the oil and gas industry.

Work Activities
Analyzing Data or Information
Analyzing well operations reports to ensure the wells and facilities asset management system accurately reflects the operations and down-hole configurations.
Analyzing well data during the maintenance and operational phase, and ensuring the well and facility asset management system accurately reflects the operations and down-hole configuration of the well-bore and boreholes.
Applying Information
Submitting and performing a quality check on data.
Selecting standard well testing.
Providing information to insurance departments so they can produce reports.
Providing information for inclusion in weekly production reports.
Communicating with Persons Outside Organization
Liaising with government agencies, partners and internal staff regarding operational reporting and data sharing issues.
Liaising with well-testing vendors.
Sharing information to meet obligations in partner agreements.
Coordinating the Work and Activities of Others
Coordinating the annual testing requirements for isolation packer tests, surface casing vent flow, casing failures or incident reporting with operations.
Coordinating the data for the zone to be tested and type of test to be conducted with well testing vendors.
Coordinating suspended or inactive well guidelines and reporting.
Determining Compliance
Preparing and filing well status changes with the regulatory authorities.
Ensuring information during the maintenance phase meets regulatory and partner obligations and communicating issues.
Ensuring requirements for fluid submission samples are met and internal applications reflect accurate data.
Documenting/Recording Information
Recording well information data.
Maintaining records of well-testing data.
Identifying Objects, Actions and Events
Identifying operational activities and reporting requirements involved in maintaining an active well.
Identifying the operational and compliance activities for inactive wells, and monitoring these wells.
Identifying different types of status changes in the maintenance phase.
Identifying the activities involved in monitoring facilities (e.g., inspections and maintenance).
Identifying the annual activities at a well and facility level.
Monitor Processes, Materials or Surroundings
Monitoring well information data.
Monitoring information contained on the drilling system and regulatory systems to ensure alignment with information on the wells and facilities asset management system.
Monitoring vendor servicing company wells to ensure well-related information is received within expected timelines.
Monitoring suspended or inactive well guidelines and reporting.
Performing Administrative Activities
Generating reports and information from the wells and facilities asset management system to support business decision-making.
Coding and approving invoices when vendor services are completed.
Handling the operational reporting requirements for well tests taken during completion, re-completion, work-over and production.
Generating reports and information from the well and facility asset management system.
