On the Job Training

Many employers provide ample learning opportunities that will enhance the skills of employees. A lot of skills training in oil and gas is done right on-the-job and through in-house employee development programs. In addition to formal training and orientation, new employees are often paired up with seasoned employees, mentors or supervisors to 'learn the ropes.'

Co-ops and Internships

Many post-secondary institutions and colleges offer co-ops and internships to complement your academic learning. Co-ops and internships are supervised work experiences, generally taken in between semesters for credit, and can be paid or non-paid. Choosing a diploma or degree program with a co-op option could greatly increase your competitive edge upon graduating. Many oil and gas employers also offer formal internship programs, and may recruit students at career fairs or other special events.

Employers in oil and gas are well-known for comprehensive training programs that keep you, the employee growing and reaching new heights in your career. Every employer offers different training options, and it's wise to do your research ahead of time.

Taking advantage of these offerings can help prepare you for a promotion, give you skills that you can use both on and off the work site, and keep you focused and engaged.
