Step by Step
To save time, follow these steps to get into the Canadian workforce:

  1. Contact one of the immigrant serving agencies listed below – they will help you get work in your chosen profession.
  2. Have your English assessed get training if required. See the Language Assessment and Training resources listed below under Other Resources for Immigrants.
  3. Have your credentials assessed and get training if required. See the Credentials Assessment resources listed below under Other Resources for Immigrants.
  4. If your profession is regulated, find out what requirements you need to meet.
  5. If you are in a trade, inquire about apprenticeship.
  6. Contact local and online agencies about updating resume and job interview skills.
  7. Contact local and online agencies that specialize in employment. See the Local Services resources listed below under Other Resources for Immigrants.

Immigrating to Canada

  • Citizenship and Immigration Canada This site offers information on visas, immigration and citizenship and provides a number of useful resources, links and services.
  • Going to Canada This portal provides access to tools and services including the translation of credential documents into English or French; assessment of qualifications and language capacity, including individual literacy levels; a synopsis of all documents and forms immigrants are required to complete; Canadian study plans; and
    'E-portfolios' for immigrants.
  • Canadian Immigration Integration Project (CIIP) Program
    Through pilot offices in China, India and the Philippines, the CIIP aims to help skilled workers prepare for labour market integration in Canada, while completing the final stages of the immigration process in their country of origin.
 

Language Assessment and Training

  • The Centre for Canadian Language Benchmarks (CCLB)
    CCLB describes, measures and recognizes the second language proficiency of adult immigrants and prospective immigrants for living and working in Canada. The website provides a link to language proficiency assessment centres throughout Canada.
  • Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC) Program The Government of Canada, in cooperation with provincial governments, school boards, community colleges, and immigrant and community organizations, offers free language training across the country for adult permanent residents. This website provides a list of the LINC assessment centres across Canada. These centres can assess your language training needs and refer you to the right LINC classes for your needs.
  • English Language Services for Adults (ELSA) The ELSA program provides basic and intermediate level English training for adult newcomers to Canada. In BC, ELSA replaces the LINC Program (Language Instructions for Newcomers to Canada). ELSA is government-funded and is free to students.
 

Credentials Assessment

  • Foreign Credentials Referral Office The Foreign Credentials Referral Office provides information, path-finding and referral services to help foreign-trained workers put their skills to work in Canada more quickly.
  • Canadian Information Centre for International Credentials
    This website has information for people thinking of moving to Canada with credentials from other countries. It includes information about credential evaluation, resources from the provinces and lists of professional organizations.
  • Alliance of Credential Evaluation Services of Canada
    This website provides links to foreign credential assessment services from across Canada.
  • Engineers Canada Engineers Canada's Engineering International-Education Assessment Program (EIEAP) assesses the educational qualifications of individuals who were educated and trained outside of Canada, by comparing their education to a Canadian engineering education.

Finding Work

  • Integration-Net's Infocentre This virtual library houses a wealth of settlement information, including employment strategies for newcomers, professional development information, and a series of FAQs.
  • Working in Canada This online tool provides detailed labour market information by occupation and by region/city, and includes a link to Canada's National Job Board.
  • Centre for Internationally Trained Professionals & Tradespeople (CITPT) CITPT provides free and unique programs that help internationally trained professionals and tradespeople secure work related to their skills and professional background.
  • Directions for Immigrants in Trades and Professional Careers Operated by Bow Valley College, this program helps internationally trained and experienced professionals restart their careers in Calgary.
  • BOWEN's Immigrant Works Program This facilitated recruitment process matches qualified immigrant professionals with paid internships of up to 12 months.
  • CRAFTCentre Helps anyone interested in the trades who are unemployed, or persons working under 20 hours per week and eligible to work in Canada, with or without previous trades related skills.
