SAIT & CEAMS Team Up for OILSIM 2008
With the energy industry forming the backbone of Calgary's economy, it makes sense to encourage local high school students to get an up-close and hands-on look at careers in this dynamic industry.
On October 23 and 24, 2008, some 200 students in Grades 11 and 12 did just that. They learned about the challenges and excitement of technical careers in the oil and gas industry through the SAIT / Centre for Energy Asset Management Studies (CEAMS) OilSim 2008 competition taking place at SAIT Polytechnic.
OilSim, developed by Simprentis Ltd., is an online simulation game that provides students with an overall understanding of the oil and gas industry. Students are grouped in teams of three or four, and each team acts as an oil company exploring for economically viable volumes of oil and gas in a new region. The teams buy and study scientific data and oil field information, discuss the appropriate actions to take, and submit their decisions to the simulation for analysis and evaluation. Teams go through all phases of the exploration process and collaborate and compete with each other to discover viable volumes of oil and gas using the least funds possible and acting in a socially and environmentally responsible way.
Members of the first place team will receive $1,000 credit toward any courses taken at SAIT's MacPhail School of Energy.
This is the first OilSim competition to be held in Canada. OilSim events are held annually in Europe with winning teams going on to international competition.
The SAIT/CEAMS OilSim 2008 is jointly sponsored by SAIT's MacPhail School of Energy and the Centre for Energy Asset Management Studies (CEAMS). Supporting sponsors are the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers, the Petroleum Human Resources Council of Canada and June Warren Publishing.
