Today, we released the first phase of the Careers in Oil + Gas online tool. This unique career planning tool allows you to browse, search and compare more than 40 select occupations within the oil and gas industry, as well as explore transferable skills between occupations and industries.

The Careers in Oil + Gas online tool aims to inform and engage new and current workers about potential career paths in a number of job families, including engineers, business and operations support, operators and technicians and technologists. These select occupational profiles examine skills and competencies, training requirements and working conditions. With a built in self-assessment feature and skills transferability matrix, the tool is designed to give both workers and employers a better understanding of cross-industry transferability.

“Most workers are not familiar with how their current qualifications, skills and experience might transfer into other occupations, so the tool may help them to identify alternative employment solutions,” says Enform’s Carol Howes, Vice President of Communications and PetroLMI. “Similarly, employers both within the oil and gas industry and other industries may not be aware of how the skills obtained in one industry may apply to another.”

PetroLMI plans to launch a second phase of the Careers in Oil + Gas tool in early 2017. Over the coming weeks and months, you’ll see:

More than 100 occupational profiles
The integration of PetroLMI’s labour market information to allow users to identify occupations in demand
Links to relevant job opportunities listed in government-sponsored job banks
Occupational videos
Additional information and resources related to the oil and gas industry
“Because this is a new tool, we would like to incorporate feedback from our stakeholders,” says Howes. “So, we are looking forward to receiving ongoing user feedback as we add new elements to the tool.”

Anyone planning a career or career change in the oil and gas industry, human resources professionals, and educators are invited to explore and provide feedback on the new tool at careersinoilandgas.com.

The Careers in Oil + Gas online tool is funded by the Government of Canada’s Sectorial Initiatives Program and the Government of Alberta.
